Chapter Seven

A seven-year-old Hudson hurried to his father’s study. With a playful smile on his face, he showed his dad the picture he had drawn on the piece of paper he had found in the kitchen. His father’s face went red and the man began to scream.

“I told you not to touch those! Look what you have done! Get out before I get my belt!”

That was the first time Hud had ever felt terrified of his father. It was also the first time he had felt that lingering sense of resentment.

Now twelve-years-old, Hudson was trying to enjoy his birthday party. He had invited his friends from school over for a party filled with air hockey and brand-new video games. Everyone was enjoying themselves, but a sobering realisation dawned on Hud as he watched two kids fight over a game controller. He barely knew any of these children. They had spent hours playing with his toys, but none of them had asked why there were tears running down his face. None of them found out that he had to console his frightened sister after overhearing his parents screaming at each other in the adjacent room. They did not care about him, all they wanted was his material possessions. The bitterness grew.

At sixteen, Hud was popular. He had friends all over the private high school he went to. He was known, but nobody truly knew him. The girlfriend he had poured his heart and soul to ended up cheating on him with a guy from his football team. Turns out she had not really been listening at all, she had just gotten together with him because he was popular. Hatred filled his body and pulsed through it like venom from a snake bite.

All Hudson could see was red. He was so overcome with anger all he wanted to do was destroy. Someone was laughing at him, mocking him. Steaming blowing out of his ears, Hud tramped over to the figure and glared at it. It was a giggling black demon wriggling in front of him, twisting its face into mocking facial expression.

“You’re an idiot, Hud.” It spoke to him in a rasping voice. “Nobody loves you and nobody needs you. You would be better off if you were dead.”

He balled his hand into a fist and slammed it into the demon’s stomach. Even after the hard blow, the demon let out a loud cackle of laughter. “You call that a punch? What kind of man are you? Put some effort into it, you worthless nobody!”

He landed another punch in the demon’s paunch. As he was winding his arm back to hit the monster again, something began to bite at his leg. Whirling around, a crawling imp was nipping at his heel. Letting out an annoyed growl, he kicked the demon at his feet away.

As he did this, he felt something touch his head. A sudden coolness covered his body like a wet towel. The fire within his belly continued to burn, desperately trying to stay aflame.
